Manifests from seed, earth, sun
Dear CSA members and farm friends,
Welcome to week 19 of our 20-week Spring/Summer CSA season, for some of our half share members this will be your last week to pick up. In the share this week, we expect to have:
- acorn squash
- red onions
- yellow onions
- mini roma or Campari tomatoes
- slicing tomatoes
- sweet peppers
- sweet potato greens
On the farm we are in a time of great transition. While we are still working with the summer crops much of our energy is going into preparing ground and planting for fall. Last week I seeded nearly three miles of carrot seed as well as a field of beets, cilantro and dill. Our propagation greenhouse is filled with broccoli, cabbage, kale, collard, chard, celery, parsley, lettuce, fennel and Brussels sprouts plants, many of which we will begin transplanting into the fields by the end of this week.
While we have developed systems and have learned about the growing patterns of our climate, planting for a new season involves a great deal of hope and faith: spreading microscopic seeds, burying them in the darkness of the earth, watering or waiting for rain. We can do our best to create the necessary conditions to bring forth life but ultimately the process is out of our control. Farming is a gamble and as CSA members we are asking you to roll the dice with us each season. Together we are sowing the seeds of a crop, planning and hoping for abundance, and if we are lucky, taking the time to recognize and enjoy the miracle of the food on our plates.
Thanks to everyone that shares in the journey with us each season. There is no way we could do it alone.
